For SEO Purposes, Can I Purchase a Domain Name that Does Not have .com at the End?

I have heard both sides of this debate from different marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does make a difference. That for some reason, Google gives more “appreciation” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is undeniable when you enter a phrase into the search engines, the top sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is generally accurate, but I have another side to that statement that you must consider when choosing which extension you should purchase.

There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org websites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact alone could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domains in their top listings. This does not mean that it is not possible that the search engines like .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domains should be in the top of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I myself have many more .com websites. I prefer them because when people enter websites into their address bar they tend to type .com. So, by just having a .com you will ensure they go to your website. If the website you were looking for in a .com has a .info available and you buy it, then as the person goes to type it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were really paying attention, they will be typing in .com. Therefore, instead of arriving at your website, they would go to someone else’s.

I do have some .info domains however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, for search engine optimization reasons it does not seem to matter which extension you choose. The SEO techniques side relies more on your keywords and links than to the domain extension you buy.

Therefore, it comes down to what you prefer. Does it matter to you whetherthey unintentionally enter .com instead of .info (or even .net)? How you answer this question will aid you in choosing which domain name extension you go with.
