Summary:
The increased levels of flooding in the last few years, have made numerous homes uninsurable. This article looks at the new schemes the government has approved with insurers to permit  more homeowners to buy home and contents. However, there will be a number of people that still can’t aquire it.

Millions of homeowners will still be able buy invaluable insurance against flooding. It has been broadcast that insurers have come to an agreement with the government after they committed to a long term flood protection deal.

Under the agreement, insurance companies have guaranteed to afford cover to all properties deemed to have a riskof less than 1 in 65 from flooding.

As long as plans are in place to lessen the risk to a satisfactory level within the coming four years, insurers will continue to make insurance available to existing small businesses and domestic. The Environment Minister said that to attain these proposals the government has committed itself to a lengthy 25 year campaign to improve flood barriers.
The government intends to improve fortifications and press householders to safeguard their properties would mean that current statement of policy agreed by insurance companies could terminate in 2014.

This deal comes over a year after floods battered areas of Hull, Gloucestershire and the Midlands. These floods resulted in 183,000 claims for flood-harmed homes, businesses and cars. Payouts from insurers came to a shocking six billion pounds.
The spokesperson told BBC Radio 4 Daily programme: “The insurers very pausibly said that it is essential to have a long-standing policy – twenty five years is the figure that we are going ahead with.

“We are looking at coastal flooding and surface water flooding as well as river flooding, to ensure that the enlarged investment that we have, is uninterrupted in the long term.”

However, the Minister omitted to say how many houses may fall outside the one in seventy five danger group and be classed as not defendable against floods, saying just: “That isn’t for government to state.”

He also stated how necessary it was that the Environment Bureau makes use of its new influence to prevent any new developments that may be in jeopardy from flooding. He also said that life cover companies were now geared up to provide better premiums to homeowners who take action to make their houses resilientagainst the chance of rising flood waters
He added: “What has altered is the climate change predictions that the experts are giving us – that the severe weather conditions are going to mushroom in the next decade.”That involves a long-term proposal … It is something we have been negotiating with the insurers. They, quite rightly, want to have assurances that homes are protected and we, quite understandably, want to do that whatever happens.”

The Chairman of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the agreement would guarantee flood fortification continued to be extensively available to homeowners.
“This agreement is tremendous news for everyone in peril of flooding,” he added. “We are happy that the government appreciates that a long-term investment strategy, effectively funded, is the best way to deal with the increasing flood threat.”

The ABI had formerly counselled that more than 600,000 properties may turn out to be uninsurable, unless the government invested more in our flood defences.
